Key Messages

The Canada-U.S. trade conflict has escalated. On August 22, the United States imposed additional 50% tariffs on $27.6 billion in Canadian goods, including covered goods that qualify for preferential treatment under CUSMA. Canada has suspended bilateral negotiations and will introduce matching counter-tariffs on U.S. imports beginning September 8.
